Captain Callum Howe departs the Minstermen

York City can confirm that club captain Callum Howe will depart the LNER Community Stadium this summer following the expiration of his contract.

Callum leaves the Minstermen after three seasons in red and blue, having made 125 appearances, scored six goals, and played a huge role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.

Joining the club ahead of the 2023/24 season, Howe quickly established himself as a leader both on and off the pitch. In his first campaign, he made 45 appearances in all competitions, helping City secure National League survival on the final day.

He scored twice that year, including a late equaliser at Maidenhead United to claim a valuable point.

The following season, the 32-year-old featured 50 times in total as City mounted a promotion challenge, finishing second in the table with 96 points before suffering heartbreak in the play-off semi-final.

Howe contributed three goals during the campaign, including a stoppage-time equaliser at home to FC Halifax Town and a memorable performance in the 7-2 victory over Aldershot Town, in which he scored once and assisted two.

Despite seeing his 2025/26 season disrupted by concussions, the centre-back still made 30 appearances and captained the side to promotion back to the Football League.

The spirit and belief shown on that final day in Rochdale will forever be remembered.

After the hosts found an equaliser deep into stoppage time, the City captain reminded his teammates and coaching staff that there was still time for one final opportunity.

When that chance arrived in the 113th minute, it was Howe himself who rose highest to head the ball back across goal for Josh Stones to force home the winner and spark scenes that will live forever in York City history.

His leadership and unwavering commitment to the cause were perfectly encapsulated in that moment.

Everyone at York City would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Cal for his outstanding service, dedication, and professionalism throughout his time at the club.

We wish Callum and his family every success for the future as he begins the next chapter of his career at Scunthorpe United.

Once a Minsterman, always a Minsterman.
