York City are delighted to announce the signing of defender Charlie McArthur following the expiry of his contract at Newcastle United.
The 21-year-old arrives in North Yorkshire after loan spells at Carlisle United and Airdrieonians, adding further quality to Stuart Maynard’s defensive options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
McArthur began his career with hometown club Kilmarnock, coming through the academy and turning professional in July 2021, before making his first-team debut at just 16 years old.
He went on to feature for the Scottish side as they secured promotion back to the Scottish Premiership.
In the summer of 2022, the Toon secured his signature, where he continued his development within the club’s academy set-up.
During his time on Tyneside, McArthur got regular minutes in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League, and the EFL Trophy.
The left-footed centre-back gained his first real taste of EFL football during a loan spell with Carlisle United in the second half of the 2024/25 season, playing ten League Two games.
Also an accomplished Scotland youth international, McArthur captained his country at the UEFA European U17 Championships before also representing Scotland at U19 and U21 level.
Now, the defender links up with the Minstermen ahead of our first season back in League Two.
Welcome to York, Charlie!
Subject to EFL and FA approval.
