Jordan Burrow's late double secured a 2-0 home win over Ashton United this afternoon and lifted City up to 15th in Vanarama National League North.

Striker Burrow took his tally for the season to 17 with goals in the 83rd and 90th minutes and gave new manager Steve Watson his first home victory in the league since taking charge last month.

Watson made four changes for the game with Kallum Griffiths, Adriano Moke, Scott Burgess, and Jake Wright replacing Daniel Parslow, Alex Harris, Josh Law, and Tom Bradbury.

Despite dominating possession and forcing a string of corners. City were unable to break the deadlock before the interval.

The best two chances fell to Wright and Sean Newton who both had close-range efforts saved by United goalkeeper George McMahon.

Wright's header struck the goalkeeper's legs and Newton's far-post effort at a corner was blocked just before McMahon collided with the post.

Ashton, who relied heavily on the long throws of fullback Javid Swaby-Neavin, created few opportunities although a Craig Hobson header had to be hacked away from the goalmouth by David Ferguson just before halftime.

City maintained their dominance in the second half and it needed a reaction save from McMahon to deny Wright with 54 minutes gone.

Defender David Mirfin headed a Burgess freekick straight at McMahon on the hour mark and the Ashton goalkeeper produced a good low save to keep out another shot from Wright.

City finally made the breakthrough with seven minutes remaining - as Burrow curled a low shot past McMahon from the edge of the area. His shot lacked any real venom but still managed to beat the goalkeeper low to his left.

The former Gateshead striker found the net again in the 90th minute - producing a high quaility finish to curl the ball over McMahon from 20 yards out.
