Former City striker Ashley Chambers scored the only goal of the game as Nuneaton Town inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the Minstermen last night in Vanarama National League North.

Chambers, a Wembley hero for City six years ago, scored after 74 minutes - taking the ball around goalkeeper Adam Bartlett after a Ryan Beswick freekick had been headed down by defender Niall Heaton.

The defeat left City in seventh spot in the table - two points above eighth-placed Chorley who have two games in hand.

Manager Martin Gray was once again without the services of the club's three main strikers - Jon Parkin, Alex Kempster, and Louis Almond - in addition to midfielders Alex Pattison and Simon Heslop due to injuries.

Bartlett made a good save early on to prevent Tom Elliott converting a cross by former City winger Daniel Nti.

Captain Sean Newton had City's first attempt on goal after 18 minutes when his shot from the edge of the box deflected wide.

Ryan Johnson might have scored for Nuneaton but bundled the ball wide at a far-post corner.

Winger Nti let City off the hook when dragging a shot wide in a one-on-one situation after running onto a pass from George Green.

Winger James Ferry struck the post for Nuneaton shortly after the interval following a stumble by Hamza Bencherif.

Chambers eventually broke the deadlock with 16 minutes to play and might have scored again in the closing stages but a curling effort from the edge of the box was just too high.

Winger Vinnie Steels, 16, made his senior debut as a late substitute for City.
