Mark Beck’s injury time goal sealed the Minstermen a 1-0 win over Matlock Town in the Buildbase FA Trophy 3rd Round.

The forward headed home a Scott Barrow free-kick well into injury time to seal York’s first win in three games in all competitions.

The Northern Premier League side had enjoyed a good start to their FA Trophy campaign, which had included wins over AFC Rushden and Diamonds, Rushall Olympic and Marske United in three previous rounds.

They had also enjoyed a successful start to their Northern Premier League campaign, as they sat 2nd in the league table, five points behind league leaders Buxton.

The Minstermen secured their place in the third round proper a couple of weeks ago with a 1-0 win over fellow National League North side Blyth Spartans and they were hoping to add a second successive win in the competition.

John Askey made two changes to the side that drew with Chorley last weekend, as new loan signing Remy Longdon came into the starting eleven alongside Josh King, to replace Clayton Donaldson and the suspended Matty Brown.

Sean Newton went close to breaking the deadlock for the Minstermen with a header after only four minutes, as he headed wide of goal after meeting a Kurt Willoughby free-kick.

Beck went close minutes later with another header for York, but he couldn’t divert the ball goal-bound after a cross in from the left-hand side.

Mark Lee’s fired inches wide of Peter Jameson’s left-hand post for Matlock after 18 minutes, getting onto the end of a mistake at the back by Scott Barrow, before Callum Chippendale also couldn’t hit the target after capitalising on another mistake at the back from Josh King.

Beck fired a low effort into the hands of Matlock keeper Sam Ogden on the half-hour mark from the edge of the area, before Willoughby curled wide of Ogden’s right-hand post from 20 yards out in what was a tight first-half in Derbyshire between both sides.

The first chance of the second half fell to Newton as he fired over the bar from long-range, before Beck couldn’t connect with a deflected cross into the penalty area from Akil Wright.

Kieran Wallace sent another effort high and wide of goal for the Minstermen on the hour mark from distance, before debutant Longdon curled the ball inches wide of Ogden’s right-hand post after cutting inside onto his left foot.

Matlock’s first chance of the second half fell to Ioan Evans with under ten minutes of play to go, but the defender headed wide of goal from a corner, not troubling Jameson.

King thought that he had given the Minstermen the lead with only four minutes to go, but the effort was ruled out for offside by the linesman.

The deadlock was finally broken though a minute into injury time, as Beck headed over the keeper from twelve yards out, rising highest to connect with a Barrow free-kick.

The win sees the Minstermen go into the hat for the fourth round draw, which will take place on Monday at 2pm.

The Minstermen’s next game is on Boxing Day when we travel across to West Yorkshire to take on Bradford (Park Avenue) at the Horsfall Stadium in the National League North (3pm kick-off).
