City beat Blyth for the third time this season, completing the hat trick over the Green Army with goals from Clayton Donaldson, Jack McKay and Paddy McLaughlin at Croft Park.

John Askey made two changes to the side that drew with Gateshead last weekend, with Donaldson replacing Willoughby up front and McLaughlin slotting into midfield with Olly Dyson playing further up in place of Remy Longdon.

It was blustery conditions for football up in Blyth, but that didn’t stop the Minstermen with an early chance for McKay after a delightful cross by Hancox on the left which allowed the winger to head inches wide of the far post on 15 minutes.

Following the first chance, it wasn’t long after when City broke the deadlock, Donaldson scoring for his second game running after Hancox found the forward at the back post, leaving the Jamaican international an open net to head home the opener.

Just a minute later City secured a two-goal cushion, this time McKay glancing his header into the bottom corner from an almost identical chance to his earlier effort. The Scotsman’s first goal for City since signing from Curzon in December.

Hancox ran rampant in midfield in the second half and had two chances early on, first winning the ball from the Blyth defensive line and dragging his strike wide and then a 25-yard effort which forced Alex Mitchell to dive and save to his left.

Just past the hour mark Hancox against linked up with Donaldson, the 37-year-old heading inches over the crossbar after latching onto a dinked ball into the box.

A third goal was coming, and McLaughlin was the man to put the rubber stamp on proceedings by dispatching a McKay back heel into the bottom corner on 71 minutes.

Blyth managed a chance of their own 10 minutes from time after a back post cross which met veteran forward Robbie Dale, but the big man smashed his header against the woodwork from two yards out.

The North East side clung on the dying stages and managed to deny a fourth goal after Donaldson ran through and had his effort blocked by Mitchell whilst under pressure from a green shirt.

City ended the contest with three points and a comfortable 90 minutes despite the turbulent weather conditions.

With results elsewhere going their way, Askey’s men now sit six points from a playoff place with two games in hand.

And City could make up ground in midweek against Bradford (Park Avenue) – kick-off is 7:45pm on Wednesday at the Horsfall Stadium.
