Numerous saves from goalkeeper Pete Jameson earned City a point at Bootham Crescent against Brackley this afternoon.

It was the first game in the new 2020/21 home kit for the Minstermen along with names and numbers on the back of shirts for the first time in four years.

The game kicked off with Brackley having the first chance, a ball dinked over the top which was well dealt with by Josh King under the heels of the forward.

Paddy McLaughlin then tried one from long-range with his left foot, dragging wide and out for a goal kick.

Brackley’s Matt Lowe then raced down the wing, cut inside, and struck just wide from the edge of the box.

Jameson was called into action for the first time just after the 20 minute mark, saving a point-blank header from a corner before Sean Newton scraped the ball clear from the goalmouth.

City then had two glorious chances to open the scoring, first Michael Woods slicing one just wide of the back post after a low cross in, and then Jake Cassidy firing the ball straight at the goalkeeper after going through one-on-one.

Harry Bunn was then unlucky not to grab an assist as he fizzed a ball across the goalmouth, only for two yellow shirts to see the ball out for a goalkick.

Steve Watson’s unfortunate injury problems continued when Josh King went down on 35 minutes, but it allowed the manager to bring on striker Reon Potts and add to the attacking strength.

And the substitute nearly provided the first goal, dinking over to Michael Woods who skied over the Grosvenor Road end under pressure.

The visitors started the second half strongly, with Lee Ndlovu heading just over the crossbar at the back post and Jameson saving a one-on-one against former Minsterman Wes York.

Jameson was again called into action minutes later, getting down low to save a shot from distance.

On the hour mark, Armson had his one-on-one saved by the City goalkeeper – who soaked up all the pressure from the Brackley front line.

Woods had another chance on 69 minutes, McLaughlin doing well to dribble in the box and play back to the midfielder who put the ball inches over the crossbar from 12 yards.

Jake Cassidy then rattled the woodwork after a cross from the right from Robbie Tinkler.

2012 hero Ashley Chambers nearly got the winner for Brackley with 10 minutes to go, cutting inside and curling inches wide of the post.

York-born teenager Rob Guilfoyle came on for his debut six minutes from the end and looked lively on the left side for City, but he didn’t have time to make the impact, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
