The Minstermen fell to a 3-0 defeat against an in-form Alfreton Town at the Impact Arena.

Two goals from Dominic Smith and a penalty from Matt Rhead was enough for the home side as they extended their unbeaten run to six games in all competitions.

York secured a 1-0 win over Spennymoor Town three days ago and John Askey was hoping his side could make it back-to-back wins in the National League North as they looked to close a five point gap up on fifth placed Chorley.

Askey made two changes from the side that beat Spennymoor on Friday afternoon. Clayton Donaldson started up top in place of Lenell John-Lewis, whilst Paddy McLaughlin also returned to the starting eleven to take his place in midfield, as Kurt Willoughby dropped out of the side onto the bench.

They travelled to Derbyshire to take on an Alfreton side who sat top of the league form table, after only dropping four points from their last five league games.

Billy Heath’s men had recently seen an upturn in form, winning three of their last five and drawing the other two, a run which had seen them close the gap up on the playoff spots to just seven points with a game in hand.

York got the upper hand over Alfreton earlier on in the season when a strike from McLaughlin secured a 1-0 win for City over their Derbyshire opponents and Askey’s men were hoping they could record a league double over them.

It wasn’t the start that York would have been hoping for as Alfreton took the lead inside 7 minutes. Adam Lund’s long-throw into the area was played into a packed penalty area, Jameson came off his line to collect the ball but Smith was on hand to beat the City shot-stopper to the ball as he headed over him into the back of the net.

McLaughlin cut inside from the right-hand side to test George Willis into a low-save five minutes later for the Minstermen, before Bailey Hobson’s deflected effort for the home side nearly doubled their lead moments later, but Jameson was on hand to react quick and parry the ball away to safety.

Things got worse for City when they conceded a penalty for a push on the line by Scott Barrow in the twenty-first minute after a free-kick played into the area from the right-hand side. Rhead stepped up from twelve yards out and sent Jameson the wrong way to double the home side’s lead.

Donaldson tried his luck from distance for City but saw his right-footed effort fly high and wide of goal just after the half-hour mark, before Olly Dyson connected with Matty Brown’s cross into the area with his head, but he lacked the necessary power to beat Willis from close-range.

Alfreton heavily relied on the direct long-throws from Lund and it ever so nearly worked again for them as Dayle Southwell tested his luck on the half-volley after City failed to clear the ball away, but his effort was easily held by Jameson.

After a slow start to the second-half, substitute Sam Sanders crossed centrally from the left-hand side and found the head of Dyson, but the midfielder was unable to test Willis from close-range as his header was easily held by the Alfreton goalkeeper.

Willis was again called into action when a deflected shot from Maziar Kouhyar fell to substitute Willoughby inside the area and the forward’s fierce left-footed strike was kept out by the Alfreton shot-stopper.

City couldn’t take their chances and they were made to pay for their wasted efforts as Alfreton found their third goal of the afternoon with eight minutes to go. A long ball into the area was headed goal-bound by Rhead towards the back-post, where Smith was on hand to bundle the ball home over the line for his second goal of the afternoon.

The defeat sees the Minstermen fall outside the playoff spots on goal difference, but they still do have a game in hand on Kettering Town who sit above them in the league table.

York’s attention’s now turn to this coming Saturday where they set to take on Gloucester City at the LNER Community Stadium as they look to bounce back with a win (3pm kick-off).
