City were second best against Leamington and fell to a 2-0 defeat at the New Windmill Ground.

Steve Watson made three changes to the side that lost to Buxton just three days prior, with Jason Gilchrist coming in for his first start in over a month and Mark Beck accompanying him in the front line.

Mitch Hancox returned to the left hand side and a back three of Sean Newton, Matty Brown and Sam Fielding allowed Akil Wright to push forward into midfield.

The game started with promise under the floodlights as Mackenzie Heaney curled a free kick towards goal which was fumbled by Jake Weaver and then saved by the goalkeeper when Akil Wright headed back towards goal.

But disaster struck a minute later when Dan Turner sprinted down the left wing, his initial cross blocked before he wrapped his foot around the ball and curled first time into the corner of the net to give the hosts the lead.

Pete Jameson then denied the Brakes a second on 14 minutes when he got down low to save from a Jack Edwards volley.

Gilchrist then had a golden opportunity to level to score on 20 minutes after latching onto a Hancox ball at the front post, but he placed over the crossbar from close range.

Leamington pushed on and grabbed a deserved second goal after 34 minutes, this time goalscorer Turner switching to provider, working the ball into the box from the left before Kelsey Mooney stepped in and hammered into the bottom corner.

City showed signs of improvement in the second half as Clayton Donaldson entered the pitch, the veteran striker nearly providing for Akil Wright as the midfielder leapt up and headed the Jamaican’s cross just wide.

Paddy McLaughlin then slammed a strike from the edge against the post before substitute Kurt Willoughby placed inches wide after receiving a squared ball from Heaney.

Paul Holleran then made three tactical substitutions in the latter stages of the game to slow the game down and secured all three points for his side – propelling the Brakes up to fourth.

On the other hand, the Minstermen’s sixth loss of the season sees the team drop to 10th in the National League North.

Next up is a trip to Curzon Ashton on Saturday, a big game for City to get back on track and narrow the 11 point gap between themselves and top spot.
