City continued their brilliant start to the National League North campaign with a 2-0 victory over Darlington, sending Steve Watson’s side eleven games unbeaten and back to the top of the table thanks to second half strikes from Alex Kempster and Paddy McLaughlin.

McLaughlin fired home a stunning 18-yard volley to mark his first start of the season on his return from injury, while Kempster notched his sixth goal of the campaign.

Both sides had opportunities to open the scoring in what was a fiercely contested first half, with Joe Wheatley trying his luck for the hosts after six minutes with an ambitious lob which nestled just over Pete Jameson’s cross bar with the City ‘keeper caught off his line.

Jordan Burrow had the best of City’s chances in the opening 45 minutes, but the striker was unable to pounce on Kieran Green’s dinked cross in the 21st minute, which was cleared off the line by Wheatley who came to the rescue for the Quakers.

Darlington began the brighter after the break as just eight minutes in to the second half, winger Jarrett Rivers latched on to a Stephen Thompson ball before striking the post with a left-footed effort.

The deadlock was eventually broken after 58 minutes as Macaulay Langstaff collected the ball against the run of play, delivering a pass into Alex Kempster who fired home with a left-footed half volley beyond the reach of Chris Elliott, sparking raptures in the away end.

Darlington almost fashioned a response ten minutes after the opener as Adam Campbell fizzed a free-kick across the face of goal but thankfully for City, there was nobody on the end of it.

City sealed the three points with four minutes to spare, as Paddy McLaughlin scored a spectacular controlled volley from the edge of the area to ensure the City faithful were sent home on the back of a seventh win of the season.
