York City were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup first round by Buxton courtesy of a Diego De Girolamo finish.

Steve Watson had made one change to the side which thrashed Blyth Spartans the previous weekend, with Sean Newton coming in at left back for the cup-tied Mitch Hancox. Five youth team players made up the seven strong bench for the Minstermen, with centre half Ben Dale included for the first time.

Backed by a 1,000 strong away following, Buxton looked confident in the early stages with the strong wind causing havoc at the LNER Community Stadium.

Paddy McLaughlin started in midfield and went close on 8 minutes, volleying just wide after receiving the ball on the edge of the box.

Northern Irish international Jamie Ward then forced Jameson to save low to his left before Akil Wright stretched across goal to block De Girolamo’s shot from the byline.

Mackenzie Heaney and Kurt Willoughby were again playing on opposite wings in a 4-5-1 formation and the swap nearly paid off when Heaney cut inside and curled in a cross to Clayton Donaldson whose header was acrobatically kept out by Theo Richardson.

Olly Dyson went close minutes later as he received the ball from McLaughlin on the edge, turned, and stuck a low drive inches wide of the left post.

However, Buxton threatened just before half time, Ward again making Jameson work to save his curling effort and then Chris Dawson looping one from distance which was tipped over the crossbar.

Sam Fielding had a great chance to open the scoring after the break, the full back latching onto a Dyson free kick at the back post with his head but Richardson somehow clawing the point-blank effort out from the goal mouth.

The Silverlands pushed forward and minutes after De Girolamo whistled a half volley over the crossbar from deep, the Italian broke through on goal and dinked Pete Jameson – his effort landing wide of the mark.

Former Minsterman Ashley Chambers came on later in the game and was involved in the game’s only goal on 85 minutes – the winger getting the better of the City defence on the right before finding De Girolamo who arrowed into the corner to send the away end into pandemonium.

City looked to have a late equaliser minutes later when substitute Jason Gilchrist had the ball in the back of the net at the back post following a long throw – only for the referee to pull it back for a foul in the box.

Richardson then saved again from Fielding at the back post in injury time to secure his side’s progression to the second round.

For Buxton, the magic of the FA Cup continues as they reach the second round draw for the first time in 63 years – on the other hand City look ahead to a Tuesday night game at Leamington in the National League North.
