LATE goals from substitutes Louis Almond and Aidan Connolly failed to prevent York City suffering a first defeat under new manager Martin Gray.

Salford City, who are second in Vanarama National League North, had stormed into a 3-0 lead after 50 minutes thanks to goals from Liam Hogan (2) and Jack Redshaw.

But City staged a brave late rally which so nearly resulted in a share of the spoils on a cold, wet, and windy afternoon in Greater Manchester.

Almond drilled a low shot into the net with six minutes to go before Connolly scored with a stunning 25 yard drive in the 90th minute.

Both Connolly and defender Josh Law struck the woodwork in the final 10 minutes but Salford hung on for victory.

Loan signing James Gray made his debut for the Minstermen as Adriano Moke dropped to the substitute’s bench.

Gray lined-up alongside Jon Parkin in attack and City adopted a 4-4-2 with Amari Morgan-Smith on the right wing.

City winger David Ferguson struck the Salford post after 15 minutes with a cross-come-shot.

However, it was a rare first half opportunity for the Minstermen who fell behind in the 22nd minute.

Defender Hamza Bencherif had conceded a foul wide on the City left and, when the freekick was delivered into the box, the ball fell to Salford captain Hogan who shot low past Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Salford doubled their lead within five minutes as the lively Redshaw curled a shot over Peacock-Farrell from the flank.

City nearly pulled a goal back in first half stoppage time when Gray’s header, from a Law corner, was tipped over the crossbar by Salford goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

The game looked beyond City's reach five minutes after the interval when Hogan scored again from a corner to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

But, having introduced a trio of substitutes - Connolly, Almond, and Moke - the Minstermen refused to give up the ghost and, after the late fightback were, ultimately, unlucky losers.
