John Askey earned his first win as interim manager as the Minstermen progressed to the 3rd round of the Buildbase FA Trophy with a 1-0 win over Blyth Spartans.

Mark Beck scored the only goal of the game after only four minutes in cold and snowy conditions at the LNER Community Stadium.

York were beaten 2-1 at home last Saturday against Kettering Town in the National League North and they were looking to get back to winning ways after four games without a victory.

Askey made four changes from the side that suffered defeat against Kettering, as Scott Barrow, Mark Beck, Sam Fielding and Kieran Wallace came into the starting eleven to replace Adam Senior, Mitch Hancox, Harrison Hopper and Mackenzie Heaney.

Last week Blyth also appointed an interim manager in Michael Barron, who came in to replace the recently departed Michael Nelson. He got off to a winning start last weekend with a 1-0 win over Guiseley, their first win in ten games in all competitions.

The home side started the game quickly and broke the deadlock after only four minutes, Beck got onto the end of low Clayton Donaldson cross from the right to tap home at the front post beyond Blyth keeper Alex Mitchell.

York nearly doubled their lead within minutes when Akil Wright broke clear into the Blyth penalty area, he pulled the ball back from a tight angle, but he couldn’t find a red shirt as the visitors cleared the ball away from danger.

Blyth had a couple of chances themselves early on in the game, but neither failed to test City keeper Peter Jameson into a save. JJ O’Donnell fired over the bar from close-range, before the midfielder sent a low left-footed effort wide of Jameson’s left-hand post.

Wright headed inches over the bar to meet a Kurt Willoughby corner after 23 minutes, before Jameson produced a finger-tip save to push an effort from Blyth over the bar as they went in search of an equaliser.

The Minstermen continued to search for a goal to double their lead and went close through Willoughby five minutes before half-time, but the forward curled wide of Mitchell’s left-hand post, after cutting inside from the left to shoot.

Willoughby volleyed wide of goal minutes into the second half, before Donaldson had to react quick to clear the ball off the line after York failed to clear the ball away from a Blyth corner.

Karl Byrne fired over the bar for the visitors from the edge of the area on the hour mark, before Matty Brown made a last-ditch block to deny Blyth substitute Michael Liddle from levelling the game in the penalty area.

The North-East side continued to press within the final third and with five minutes to go they thought that they had found a way back into the game, but Sean Reid’s long-range effort from 30 yards out hit the crossbar and went out of play for a goal kick.

York held on for victory, which sees them advance into the next round of the FA Trophy.

The draw for the third round of the Buildbase FA Trophy will be held on Monday, but the Minstermen’s immediate attentions will now turn to next Saturday when we travel to Nethermoor Park to take on Guiseley in the National League North (3pm kick-off).
