Striker Jon Parkin celebrated the signing of a new deal with two goals but it was not enough to prevent City slipping to defeat against Blyth Spartans.

Parkin, who has now committed his future to the club until summer 2019, took his goal tally for the season to 18 courtesy of a penalty kick in the first half and a close range strike three minutes from the final whistle.

But it was fourth-placed Blyth who went home with all three points thanks to goals from Sean Reid, Adam Wrightson, and Greg Rutherford.

Manager Martin Gray made two changes to his starting line-up with Amari Morgan-Smith and Aidan Connolly replacing Sean Newton, who was injured, and James Gray who dropped to the bench.

Loan signings Jonny Burn, Sean McAllister, and Alex Pattison made home debuts while Parkin took on the captaincy in Newton's absence.

Blyth took the lead after 25 minutes when Reid converted a penalty awarded for Daniel Rowe's foul on Robert Dale.

However, City were back on level terms just four minutes later when referee John Matthews awarded a penalty for a Nathan Buddle challenge on Connolly. Parkin duly converted from the spot.

Wrightson, who was on as a substitute for the injured Ryan Hutchinson, restored the visitors' advantage in the 35th minute - sprinting onto a through ball and dinking the ball over City goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

City could have equalised in first half stoppage time when Morgan-Smith got goalside of the Blyth defence, however his shot struck the post and he was unable to convert the rebound under pressure from Buddle and Reid

Despite enjoying lengthy periods of possession, City fell further behind in the 73rd minute as Rutherford took advantage of hesitancy in defence to hit a low shot past Bartlett.

The  City goalkeeper produced a fine block minutes later to deny Jarret Rivers.

Parkin offered City a lifeline three minutes from time - shooting past goalkeeper Peter Jameson at the second attempt after controlling a ball into the box from Hamza Bencherif.

Although Dale subsequently hit the post for Blyth with a 25-yard effort, City had been pushing hard for an equaliser at the end.

Connolly flashed a shot into the side netting and Parkin was beaten to a far post cross by Atkinson in the final seconds.
