City's pre-season campaign ended with an emphatic 6-1 victory tonight against Midland League Premier Division side Ilkeston Town.

Jake Wright (2), Simon Heslop, Alex Kempster and Jordan Burrow (PEN) were on target for the Minstermen along with substitute Coleby Shepherd who scored his first goal for the club in the closing stages.

The game kicked-off 30 minutes later than scheduled after City's players and supporters had been held up by traffic congestion on the M1.

Manager Martin Gray made one change to his side -up with striker Wright replacing Macaulay Langstaff who had started in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United eight days earlier.

Defender Joe Tait made his first appearance after joining the club but Tom Allan, who warmed-up with the rest of the City players, was not risked after three games out with a knee injury.

Despite dominating the early exchanges and creating a number of good opportunities, City fell behind after 18 minutes when striker Malachi Lavelle-Moore headed home at a Jamie Walker freekick.

But City were soon back on level terms thanks to a superb goal by striker Wright who burst between defenders before planting a low shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Liam Mitchell.

City then took firm control of the contest by scoring two goals in the space of a minute courtesy of Heslop and Kempster.

Heslop scored from 25 yards in the 36th minute after receiving the ball from a corner and Kempster scored from close range moments later after goalkeeper Liam Mitchell failed to hold a shot from Jordan Burrow.

The Minstermen might have increased their advantage in the closing stages of the first half as Wes York drove wide and Wright's shot was blocked by the legs of goalkeeper Mitchell.

Ilkeston made seven changes at the interval and fell further behind just four minutes into the second half.

It was a goal of real quality by City as Kempster ran onto Burrow's measured pass and delivered a perfect cross that was headed home by Wright.

Burrow increased City's lead from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after Wright had been fouled by Ilkeston's Tom Marshall.

With his side leading 5-1 at the hour mark, manager Gray made five changes but City remained in firm control of the contest.

Marshall nearly pulled a goal back for Ilkeston in the 85th minute but his freekick struck the top of the City crossbar.

Teenage substitute Shepherd had the final word, however, adding a sixth goal for City with a neat finish at the far post.
