Clayton Donaldson marked his first game back for York City with a winning goal – 14 years after his last finish for the Minstermen – as City won their pre-season opener 2-1 against Whitby Town.

The Seasiders struck first on home territory with former red and blue man Bradley Fewster before ‘Trialist G’ grabbed an equaliser and Donaldson sealed the deal towards the end of the game.

Steve Watson opted for two different teams in each half, with a mixture of trialists and first team players taking to the field against the Northern Premier League outfit.

The first real effort of the game dropped to 18-year-old Jack Degruchy on who was played in after a smart passing move on the right of the box and forced Shane Bland to push for a corner.

On 22 minutes ‘Trialist B’ for City picked up the ball in the centre of the park, drove forward and shot just wide of the target from 25-yards.

The best chance of the half fell to Jason Gilchrist after Whitby goalkeeper Shane Bland lost the ball on the edge of the box to a purple shirt and was relieved after the former South Shields man headed wide under pressure.

Sean Newton then had a dipping free kick well saved before Bradley Fewster curled into the top corner with a first-time strike from 25 yards following a counter-attack from Whitby.

In the second half the Minstermen looked strong is possession, with Akil Wright and ‘Trialist G’ looking particularly comfortable after combining down the left wing, with the ‘Trialist’ putting just wide after being played inside.

Donaldson then got the better of a Whitby defender and went through one-on-one before shooting straight into the goalkeeper’s arms.

Former City youngster Nathan Dyer was fielded by the opposition in the second half and went close down the right with a strike from an acute angle whistling wide of the top corner.

‘Trialist G’ capped off his impressive second half performance with a superb free kick on 76 minutes, which was won by his own quick feet, and dispatched up and over the wall from the edge of the box.

Colby Shepherd then hit wide from the edge following a short corner before a fantastic City play gave them the lead, ‘Trialist G’ putting in work down the left wing and passing inside to Luke Jones who flicked to the veteran striker in the area who made no mistake slotting into the corner.

The game finished 2-1 in favour of City, kickstarting Steve Watson’s pre-season on a high note ahead of the big game against Newcastle United at the LNER Community Stadium next Sunday.
