Teenagers Ryan Whitley and Jasper Moon both made senior debuts as City beat Southport 1-0 this afternoon at Bootham Crescent.

York-born Whitley, 19, stepped in for goalkeeper Adam Bartlett - who was absent due to illness - and 18-year-old Moon, currently on a work experience loan from Barnsley, partnered Sean Newton in the centre of defence.

Both youngsters produced solid displays as City kept a first clean sheet in five games and returned to winning ways courtesy of a 32nd minute strike from Macaulay Langstaff.

Manager Steve Watson made three changes to his side with striker Jake Wright - back from a loan spell at Boston United - employed at the tip of a five-man midfield.

Adriano Moke was unavailable due to suspension and defender Joe Tait was also ruled out by illness.

City might have taken the lead after just five minutes but Alex Kempster's close-range shot hit the post and Wright's follow-up was blocked by goalkeeper Dan Hanford.

Southport rarely tested Whitley in the first half but the teenager dealt confidently with a number of crosses and corners and also saved low at his near post from David Morgan.

Moon, meanwhile, spurned an opportunity to mark his senior debut with a goal when shooting wide at a Burgess corner.

Langstaff broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when firing the ball into the top corner of the net with an angled drive following a short corner by Burgess.

It was the striker's fourth goal in as many games since his return from a loan spell at Bradford (Park Avenue).

Both sides missed opportunities to score in first-half stoppage time. Kempster took the ball around Southport goalkeeper Hanford but was unable to get his shot past defender Reagan Ogle.

Meanwhile, Southport striker Jordan Archer was denied by a last-ditch block from Moon as he bore down on the City goal.

Whitley was called into action soon after the interval to push away a low shot from Dion Charles but Southport generally were kept away from the City goal.

Ferguson dragged a shot wide with 20 minutes to go after a clever back-heel from Kempster but City were unable to add to their goal tally.

Southport's only other chance of note fell to Ryan Astles in the 76th minute but the centreback headed wide at a corner.

The victory lifted City up to 12th in Vanarama National League North - eight points adrift of the play-offs with only four games left to play.
