A goal from Alex Kempster and a thumping strike from Sean Newton helped City reach the first round of the F.A Cup for the second year in a row, beating Stockport County 2-0 in front of a jubilant Bootham Crescent crowd.

Steve Watson made two changes to the side that drew with AFC Telford. Dan Maguire retuned from injury and Kallum Griffiths came in. Patrick McLaughlin and Nathan Dyer dropped to the bench.

York were dominant for the majority of the first half, and the first chance came after just two minutes, with Jordan Burrow flicking the ball on for Maguire who fired over.

Stockport had their first chance shortly after but Sam Minihan headed over from just outside the six yard area. They then had a better chance following a pull back from the left however City got a vital block in to prevent County taking the lead.

Just a minute later and City had a great opportunity of their own to take the lead, but Maguire couldn’t direct the ball goalward after a great drilled in cross from Newton.

York had most of the ball throughout the first half and deservedly went ahead through Alex Kempster. His cross from the right hand side evaded everyone in the box and went into the bottom corner giving City the lead after 27 minutes.

Just two minutes later and Newton made it 2-0 with a thunderous strike. He picked the ball up 25 yards out and smashed a shot goalward. The ball took a slight deflection to beat Ben Hinchliffe in the Stockport goal.

County could have got back in the game just before half time. A cleverly worked free kick ended up at the back post but the City defenders got back just in time to block the header and keep the Minstermen 2-0 up at half time.

Straight after the break and City continued to create chances. Kempster drove into the penalty and fired goalward, only for his shot to smash the crossbar. Maguire then had his close range shot saved by Hinchliffe.

Stockport started to create chances themselves early in the second half. The best one probably fell to Sam Walker on the edge of the box but his shot was well blocked.

David Ferguson tried his luck from 20 yards out after a great switch by Burrow, however his shot was easily saved.

With Stockport pushing to try and get back into the game, City started to get more chances. Kempster and Burrow broke at pace, but they couldn’t convert a two on one. Shortly after, Kempster was able to bring a cross down and fire goalward, only to see his shot deflected over.

The chances really dried up for both sides for a good 10 minutes, with a speculative effort from 30 yards out from Jordan Keane of Stockport the closest anyone came.

In the 90th minute, City nearly made it three, but Kempster’s lofted effort went narrowly wide of the post.

Stockport were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time. Joe Leesley was given his marching orders for a terrible tackle. Just moments before, they had nearly pulled themselves a goal back, however City held on for a much deserved 2-0 victory to put themselves into the hat for the 1st round draw on Monday 21st October.
