Leamington 2 York City 2

YORK CITY conceded two late goals to gift Leamington a share of the spoils.

The Minstermen led 2-0 with just five minutes to go thanks to goals from David Ferguson and Jon Parkin.

But Leamington, who had rarely threatened during the rest of the game, scored twice in the space of three minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw.

Goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell made his debut for the Minstermen after arriving on a month’s loan from Leeds United.

With winger Aidan Connolly ruled out by injury, there was also a recall for the fit-again Alex Whittle.

City played a 4-4-2 formation with Ferguson on the left-wing and Simon Heslop on the opposite flank.

Heslop might have scored in the opening minute when picked out by Adriano Moke but his downward volley was pushed away by goalkeeper Jose Veiga.

However, City took the lead in the ninth minute when Ferguson finished off a brilliant counter-attack.

Breaking quickly from a Leamington corner, Heslop switched play to Moke who laid the ball into the path of Ferguson who scored from the edge of the box.

City should have doubled their advantage after 29 minutes but skipper Sean Newton blazed the ball over the bar from close range.

The ball had just bounced back off the crossbar after a misplaced header by Leamington defender Junior English following a Josh Law freekick.

City created far more opportunities than Leamington before the interval but were unable to increase their lead.

Hamza Bencherif headed narrowly wide from a Heslop freekick and Jon Parkin shot off target on more than one occasion.

Newton spurned another great chance in first half stoppage time - shooting over from six yards after a pull-back from the byline by striker Amari Morgan-Smith.

Although Leamington made a determined start to the second period, they fell further behind in the 53rd minute following a mistake by goalkeeper Veiga.

The 40-year-old, who was making his debut, misjudged the bounce of a long clearance which allowed Parkin to take advantage and roll the ball home.

Leamington rarely threatened a revival before the late drama although a Dunbar shot was blocked by Heslop and a Kurtis Raven shot saved comfortably at the near post by Peacock-Farrell.

Defender English found the net with five minutes to go provide Leamington’s initial lifeline.

Capitalising on a defensive lapse, English forced the ball over the line after Peacock-Farrell blocked a shot from Kurtis Revan with his legs.

Less than three minutes later, substitute Liam Canavan equalised – picking up a throw just inside the box and curling a shot inside the far post.

City nearly salvaged victory in stoppage time but a Daniel Parslow header was blocked and a Bencherif header hacked off the line.
