Steve Watson's first home game as City manager ended in a 4-1 defeat to league leaders Chorley.

The visitors scored two goals in the first 15 minutes before City gained a foothold in the contest thanks to a Jordan Burrow penalty.

Although City had threatened an equaliser, a header from Josh Wilson in the 76th minute put the game beyond reach.

Alex Newby then added a fourth goal in the 83rd minute after Marcus Carver's shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Watson had made five changes from the defeat at Stockport County and switched to the 3-5-2 system that he employed at his previous club Gateshead.

Loan recruits Paddy McLaughlin, Scott Burgess, and Tom Bradbury made instant debuts and there were also recalls for centreback Tait and wingback Wes York.

Chorley took the lead after just eight minutes when goalkeeper Adam Bartlett misjudged a corner allowing centreback Scott Leather to slide the ball over the line at the far post.

City almost hit back immediately but Burrow's far-post header from an Alex Kempster cross came back off the post.

Chorley doubled their advantage in the 15th minute after Kempster fouled Elliott Newby on the edge of the City penalty area.

Centreback Courtney Meppen-Walter took the subsequent freekick which deflected off the wall on its way past goalkeeper Bartlett.

City shook off the early setback and began to settle midway through the first half.

After Wes York won a corner, City were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute when goalkeeper Matt Urwin was adjudged to have fouled Jake Wright.

Burrow's penalty was initially saved by Urwin but the City captain kept his composure to convert the rebound.

City nearly equalised just before the interval but Urwin showed good reactions to hold onto a close-range header from Tait.

A positive start to the second period saw City pushing back the league leaders but Chorley's third goal after 76 minutes effectively sealed victory - striker Wilson rising to head home a cross from Andy Teague.

Urwin made a reaction save to block a far post header from Tait before Alex Newby completed the scoring with Chorley's fourth - converting from close range after Marcus Carver's near post effort struck the crossbar.
