City grabbed their first win of pre-season this afternoon, overcoming League One opposition Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Bootham Crescent.

Bolton kicked off in their first pre-season friendly against the Minstermen with a relatively unknown side consisting of mainly trialists.

And York started the stronger side in the early stages with the Trotters struggling for possession and seemingly not posing much of an attacking threat.

Kempster played a great game down the right flank and nearly caused the Bolton defenders further headache when he burst through on goal; his effort eventually blocked by the goalkeeper.

But minutes later his persistence paid off as the forward gambled on a back-pass and Kempster tapped past a bemused Matt Alexander in between the sticks.

It took 35 minutes for the visitors to register their first shot; a 30-yard free kick which was easily gathered by Ryan Whitley as York looked to continue their dominant display.

York then nearly doubled their lead before half time through a Jordan Burrow header which flew just over the crossbar on 44 minutes with the whistle blowing moments later.

The second half saw an overhaul of the Bolton squad with only Yoann Zouma and Jordan Boon remaining on the pitch from the team which started the contest.

Despite the changes York stayed firmly in possession of the game, going close on 50 minutes with Kieran Green blasting over at the back post from a Nathan Dyer cross and Jordan Burrow toe-poking the ball just wide moments later.

City excelled on the 70th minute and were unlucky not to score another with an onslaught on the Bolton goal starting with Kempster firing over from an acute angle and Dyer whistling one past the post on the next attack.

Paddy McLaughlin wanted to get in on the action and went close on 75 minutes, his side footed effort saved by the legs of Alexander after being played into the box.

There was not much to shout about in the final stages as the whistle blew for full time – in the end a well-deserved victory for Steve Watson’s side.
