NEW signing Adam Bartlett saved a penalty on his York City debut to ensure victory in a five goal thriller at Alfreton Town.

Bartlett, who joined the Minstermen in midweek from Darlington, dived low to his right to prevent Bradley Wood equalising from the spot with 15 minutes to go.

Striker Jon Parkin had scored from the spot at the opposite end just five minutes earlier to make it 3-2 after former City midfielder Tom Platt was sent off for committing a second bookable offence when pulling back striker Gary Martin in the Alfreton penalty area.

Alfreton were presented with an opportunity to draw level for the third time in the game when City captain Sean Newton handled at a corner.

Bartlett, however, came to the rescue with a stunning save which justified his pre-match billing as the 'best goalkeeper outside the Football League', according to manager Martin Gray.

Midfielder Aidan Connolly had opened the scoring for the Minstermen in the 13th minute with a hooked shot that bounced in off a post.

Cieran Keane equalised for Town in the 33rd minute with a shot from 12 yards after being picked out unmarked in the penalty area by Platt.

City weathered heavy pressure both before and after the interval but regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Parkin scored with a poacher's finish from Connolly's low cross.

In a game full of twists and turns, City were pegged back for the second time in the game just a few minutes later.

City midfielder Daniel Rowe was cautioned for a foul on Alfreton midfielder Brendon Daniels 35 yards out and then substituted by manager Gray.

Daniels then unleashed a thunderbolt from the subsequent freekick which flew into the roof of the City net to make it 2-2.

City regrouped after the shock of Daniels' strike and, helped by some astute substitutions and improved levels of fitness, began to re-impose their authority on the game.

Substitute Amari Morgan-Smith was unlucky not to score in the 62nd minute but his shot was blocked on the line by a defender after goalkeeper Chris Elliott half-saved Martin's initial effort.

Parkin then scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 70th minute - silencing the jibes of the home supporters who were also shaking the back of the net as he took his crucial penalty kick!

Bartlett's penalty save sealed a memorable victory and maintained City's position in the Vanarama National League North play-off zone.
