Substitute Connor Smith scored his first senior goal to earn the Minstermen a point against Chorley this afternoon at Bootham Crescent.

Smith equalised with a 72nd minute far post effort after Chorley led for over an hour thanks to a stunning 25-yard strike from Alex Newby.

The draw lifted City up to fourth in the Vanarama National League North table with six more games to play - starting with Easter Monday's trip to FC United of Manchester (kick-off 3pm).

Strikers James Gray and Raul Correia both returned to the side as replacements for Alex Kempster and Louis Almond who failed to shake off hamstring injuries suffered against Southport in midweek.

Striker Jon Parkin was still ruled out following knee surgery and midfielder Simon Heslop was suspended.

Chorley took the lead just 10 minutes into the game when midfielder Newby scored with a sensational 25-yard shot past goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

Referee Paul Brown, however, ignored calls for a City freekick in the build-up to the goal when midfielder Alex Pattison appeared to have been fouled by Jake Cottrell.

Pattison limped off a few minutes later - just to compound City's frustration.

City pressed hard for an equaliser before the interval and striker Correia spurned the best opportunity when shooting over from 12 yards out after playing a neat 'one-two' with Aidan Connolly.

With substitute Adriano Moke providing an impressive midfield spark, City continued to push Chorley back in the second half.

Manager Martin Gray introduced teenager Flynn McNaughton for his debut in attack along with the versatile Connor Smith.

City's pressure finally paid off in the 72nd minute when Smith tucked the ball home at the far post after a good run and cross from wingback David Ferguson.

It was Smith's first goal in professional football and the former Hartlepool United winger, 21, was duly mobbed by team-mates and coaching staff as he celebrated in the technical area.

Although City looked the more likely to score a second goal in the final 20 minutes, honours ultimately ended even.

Smith had the final opportunity of the match - deep into stoppage time - but headed a cross from Josh Law onto the roof of the net.
