The Minstermen ran rampant against Blyth Spartans, recording the club’s largest victory under the management of Steve Watson with a 4-0 victory.

New signing Mitch Hancox came straight into the fold at left back, with Michael Woods dropping out through injury and Paddy McLaughlin starting in the heart of a midfield five.

City were looking to bounce back from a midweek defeat at Boston and didn’t waste any time, with a long throw in from Clayton Donaldson finding Paddy McLaughlin who glided through the box unmarked and toe-poked into the bottom corner just two minutes in.

Donaldson nearly provided a second minutes later as the veteran forward broke through on the left and pulled back for Kurt Willoughby who forced Alex Mitchell to turn over with his feet.

Centre half Matty Brown was the man to double City’s lead on 16 minutes, receiving the ball in the box from a throw-in and shooting with his back to goal into the bottom corner for his second of the season.

Willoughby then tested the Spartans’ goalkeeper with a 30-yard free kick before Mackenzie Heaney added a third goal just before the half hour mark. Heaney, who was playing on the right side, was played in by Donaldson and made no mistake on his weaker foot from close range.

Things went from bad to worse for Blyth in the second half as City struck again through Willoughby – the striker guiding in a low Olly Dyson cross after the winger danced through three green shirts on the right.

City were not content with four and went close minutes later through a Brown header which was glanced inches wide following a Dyson free kick.

17-year-old Kyle Lancaster came on in the latter stages for his league debut and nearly set up Heaney for a second, the teenager dribbling through on the right with quick feet and manging to get the ball to the winger who rattled the woodwork from close range.

Blyth held on to avoid further blows in the dying moments, whereas York came away with all three points at the LNER Community Stadium – edging a place in the National League North playoff places.

Next up for the Minstermen is another home tie in the Emirates FA Cup next weekend against Buxton – 3pm kick-off on Saturday.
