Ten-man City suffered a 5-1 defeat at Darlington this afternoon in Vanarama National League North.

Winger Alex Bray was sent off just before the interval - with City trailing 2-0 after goals from Andrew Nelson and Harvey Saunders.

Darlington took full advantage in the second half - adding a further three goals with City's only reply coming from substitute Jake Wright.

Manager Sam Collins had named an unchanged side following the 2-1 victory over Brackley Town but included new loan signing Liam Agnew on the bench.

Goalkeeper Adam Bartlett produced a good early save to deny Jordan Nicholson but City were unlucky not to score when Josh Law's freekick struck the woodwork.

Bartlett was called upon again in the 16th minute to make a brilliant double block at close range from Nicholson and then Saunders before Nelson fired wide.

Moments later, City hit the woodwork again when Bray shot against the post after goalkeeper Jonny Maddison was beaten in the air by Jordan Burrow.

Darlington were awarded a penalty on the half hour mark when teenager fullback Nathan Dyer bundled Nelson over the box.

Nelson duly broke the deadlock with a penalty that fizzed into the top right hand corner of Bartlett's net.

Darlington doubled the lead just seven minutes later when Saunders converted from six yards after Bartlett had initially blocked a shot at the near post from Nicholson.

Things got worse for City in the closing stages of the first half as on loan winger Bray was given his marching orders for two bookable challenges in quick succession on Luke Trotman and Tom Elliott.

Darlington increased their advantage after being awarded a second penalty in the 52nd minute.

Striker Saunders appeared to push Daniel Parslow in a chase for the ball but the referee waved play on until Saunders was then tripped by Joe Tait. Nelson sent Bartlett the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Burrow could have reduced the deficit to 3-1 moments later but volleyed over the bar from eight yards when meeting a cross from Wes York.

Nelson was denied a hat-trick when Bartlett blocked his shot after Will Smith's initial header struck the crossbar.

However Nicholson added the fourth for Darlington in the 61st minute - racing onto a pass from Saunders and lobbing Bartlett who had dashed out of his penalty area in a bid to intercept.

Substitute Wright pulled a goal back for City in the 66th minute - beating goalkeeper Maddison after running onto a price from Agnew.

But it was only temporary relief for City as Darlington defender Liam Hughes headed in a fifth goal at a corner with ten minutes to play.
