GOALS from Macaulay Langstaff and Joe Tait secured a 2-0 victory for City tonight at Ashton United in Vanarama National League North.

Langstaff, who was promoted to the starting line-up after scoring as a substitute against Alfreton Town, broke the deadlock in the 76th minute - just two minutes after Ashton had been reduced to ten men by the dismissal of midfielder Scott Sephton.

Defender Tait added the second eight minutes later with a header from a Kallum Griffiths freekick.

With Alex Kempster and Sean Newton both ruled out by injuries, Langstaff and Tom Allan made first starts of the season.

Langstaff played in attack alongside Jordan Burrow while Jake Wright moved from attack to left wing and filled the gap vacated by Kempster. Allan took over at leftback from Newton.

Goalscoring opportunities were thin on the ground at both ends of the field during a closely-contested first half.

City goalkeeper Adam Bartlett was relatively uninvolved although it needed a superb last ditch tackle from Griffiths to deny Nic Evangelinos after a surge into the penalty area by Dom McHale.

The best chance of the first half fell to City after Ashton defender Matthew Regan was booked for a foul on Wes York near the corner flag.

Griffiths' freekick found Allan lurking at the far post but his downward header was scrambled around the post by goalkeeper Josh Ollerenshaw.

Bartlett was forced into action at the start of the second half - diving to his right to push a shot from Dom McHale around the post.

Manager Gray swapped striker Parkin for winger Wright but then lost midfielder Adriano Moke with a shoulder injury.

Ashton were reduced to ten men in the 73rd minute when Sephton was shown his second yellow card in the space of just nine minutes.

It took just two minutes for City to make the numerical advantage count as Langstaff bundled the ball home following a long Allan throw.

Ashton's ill-discipline proved costly again in the 82nd minute when midfielder Samuel Sheridan lashed out at Russ Penn as the pair tussled for the ball.

Sheridan was booked and the subsequent freekick from Kallum Griffiths was headed home by Tait.
