CITY suffered a first defeat in seven games this afternoon against Stockport County in Vanarama National League North.

First half goals from Darren Stephenson and Matthew Warburton settled the contest but Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe also produced a string of important saves to end City's unbeaten run.

Manager Martin Gray had been forced to change his starting line-up because midfielder Aidan Connolly was ruled out by illness.

Gray subsequently switched to a 4-4-2 formation in Connolly's absence with Adriano Moke and David Ferguson playing as widemen.

On a poor playing surface, Stockport took the lead in the 24th minute after City lost a header in the middle of the park and Stephenson was sent clear by Warburton.

Stephenson advanced into the City area before drilling a low shot across goalkeeper Adam Bartlett and inside the far post.

City rarely threatened in the first half although a shot from Jon Parkin was hacked off the line by Dan Cowan after the ball had clipped the foot of defender Jamie Stott.

Warburton - who was playing in the hole behind two strikers - doubled County's lead in the 31st minute - scoring with a low shot from the edge of the area that appeared to slip under goalkeeper Bartlett.

Defender Jonny Burn was then booked just before the interval for pulling the shirt of County striker Jason Oswell.

Gray introduced striker Amari Morgan-Smith and defender Daniel Parslow at halftime and switched to a 3-1-4-2 formation with Simon Heslop sitting deep in midfield.

City's performance improved in the second half but goalkeeper Hincliffe repeatedly stood in their way.

The former Preston North End and Oxford United goalkeeper, 30, tipped a Heslop volley over the bar and twice saved at the feet of Morgan-Smith.

He also produced a flying save to push a shot from Connor Brown around the post after a Parkin header had been acrobatically cleared off the line by substitute Scott Duxbury.

City have dropped to sixth in the table - but remain five points clear of the chasing pack outside the play-off zone.
