Kurt Willoughby scored a hat-trick as the Minstermen progressed to the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup after securing a 3-1 win over Morpeth Town in the Fourth Qualifying Round Replay.

Two goals from Willoughby set the Minstermen on their way in the first half at Craik Park, before he completed his hat-trick early into the second half. Ryan Donaldson pulled one back for the home side, but it wasn’t enough as York progress to the next round of the competition.

The original cup tie ended in a 1-1 draw at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Mark Beck’s first half opener was cancelled out by a late header from Ben Sayer in the second half.

Steve Watson made two changes from the side that drew on Saturday in the original tie, as Willoughby was one of two changes to come into the starting eleven alongside Clayton Donaldson.

It was the home side who went close to opening the scoring after only seven minutes as Jack Foalle had to reach out to try and connect with a Michael Turner cross in from the right, but the Morpeth winger was unlucky to not connect with the ball whilst reaching out.

City went close themselves after 15 minutes to break the deadlock when Beck got onto the end of a Paddy McLaughlin delivery from the left-hand side, but the forward was unable to keep his header down as it flew high and wide of Dan Lowson’s goal.

Morpeth went close again three minutes later when a well-struck corner in from Liam Noble was missed by Peter Jameson, before the ball deflected off a York defender onto the post and out for another corner.

It was the Minstermen who took the lead after 19 minutes when Sam Fielding sent a perfectly timed through ball across the ground to unlock Willoughby, who curled an effort over the head of Lowson into the bottom right corner to give the away side the lead.

Willoughby doubled the Minstermen’s lead eleven minutes later when he finished low beyond Lowson from close-range, after being played clear through on goal from a superbly timed through-ball by Olly Dyson.

Morpeth went close through Andrew Johnson five minutes before the break, as the home side hit the woodwork for the second time from another well-worked corner in from Noble on the right-hand side.

Seven minutes into the second half Morpeth went close through Sean Taylor, who had a right-footed effort curl wide of Jameson’s right-hand post, before Jameson had to react quick to tip away an in-swinging delivery in from Noble.

Willoughby earnt his hat-trick in the 55th minute making it 3-0 to York, curling home a well struck right-footed effort beyond Lowson into the top-right corner from 25 yards out.

Morpeth went down the other end and pulled one back through Donaldson two minutes later, who tapped home at the far post unmarked after a good delivery in from the right byline.

The home side had further chances to find a second goal within quick succession, but neither Donaldson or Johnson could make the most of their efforts.

Michael Woods was unlucky to not earn York’s fourth goal of the night when he curled an effort inches wide of Lowson’s right-hand post from distance, before substitute Heaney made a brilliant break down the left flank before drifting the ball inches wide across the face of goal.

The Minstermen progress into the First Round of the FA Cup, where they will take on Buxton at home on Saturday 6th November, ensuring the scheduled trip to the North-East to take on Gateshead in the National League North on that day will be rescheduled for a later date.

Meanwhile, City’s immediate attentions now turn to next Saturday’s National League North clash against Chester FC, where they will welcome the Cheshire side to the LNER Community Stadium (3pm kick-off).
