The Minstermen extended their unbeaten run in pre-season with a 1-0 win over Ossett United on a warm summer’s evening at Ingfield.

After a quiet first half from both teams, Kurt Willoughby broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with a tap in to give The Minstermen victory in West Yorkshire.

Micky Cummins took charge of the Minstermen for the evening, with the side containing a mixture of first team players and youngsters from the club’s academy, whilst manager Steve Watson watched on from the stands.

Northern Premier League Division One East side Ossett United’s starting eleven contained current City players Reon Potts and Archie Whitfield, who are both on loan at the club, as well as former academy duo Jake Teale and Aaron Haswell.

First chance of the game fell to the home side when Whitfield was presented with time and space to shoot from the edge of the area, but he sent a powerful right-footed effort over the lend-hand side of Ryan Whitley’s bar.

It took City 18 minutes for their first effort towards goal. An unmarked Sam Fielding rose highest to meet a Michael Duckworth free-kick, but he headed inches over Jake Teale’s goal.

Willoughby couldn’t quite get the correct connection with the ball as he tried to lob Teale from outside of his area after 24 minutes, before academy player Josh Knowles got onto the end of a long Whitley kick before firing narrowly over the bar on the counter.

York had another chance wasted when Michael Wood’s fired over on the half-volley from the edge of the area, before Heaney sent a curling-effort also over the bar just after the half-hour mark.

Ossett made six substitutions at half-time, with one of them going inches away from giving his side the lead immediately after the restart, but Trialist E couldn’t get onto the end of a low cross from the right byline.

York half-time sub Paddy McLaughlin tested Teale into a smart save five minutes after his introduction onto the field, after cutting inside from the right-hand side to find space to shoot.

York took the lead after 53 minutes when Willoughby was on hand to walk the ball into the back of the net to break the deadlock. Mackenzie Heaney’s brilliantly-timed through ball fell to Michael Woods, who unselfishly teed up Willoughby to score from close-range, after drawing the goalkeeper off his line in the build-up.

The Minstermen took control of possession within the second half and grew with confidence as they went in search for a second goal. Substitute Johnny Haase had a brilliant opportunity to double the away sides lead, but Teale had to react quick to get down low to send his effort out for a corner.

Cameron Clark was unlucky to not find his side an equalizer with twenty minutes to go, as he headed inches wide of Maison Campbell’s left-hand post, after an inviting cross from Tabish Husain on the left.

Despite ending the game with a side containing several Youth Teamers, York held on for victory, as they extended their unbeaten run so far established in pre-season. They will travel to Nottingham this coming Saturday as they set to take on National League side Notts County at Meadow Lane (3pm kick off), in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the new campaign.
