In Memoriam: Alan Little

York City is saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Alan Little (1955 – 2024) aged 69.

After over 400 player appearances across a career with Aston Villa, Southend, Barnsley, Doncaster, Torquay, Halifax, and Hartlepool, Little moved into coaching at Hartlepool in 1986 following retirement.

In 1988, Little joined York as assistant manager to John Bird who arrived in a package deal.

After Bird departed in 1991, Little retained his role at the football club under John Ward.

His time came to lead in 1993 as he was promoted to York City first team manager, starting quick with a 5-1 victory away to promotion rivals Barnet.

Little took York into the play-offs in 4th position that 1992/93 season. The Minstermen beat Bury before a penalty shoot-out victory followed against Crewe at Wembley Stadium in May 1993.

Alan Little’s side nearly achieved back-to-back promotions the following 1993/94 Division 2 campaign, finishing 5th in the league before being beaten by Stockport County in the semi-final.

Little also brought supporters memorable League Cup victories against Manchester United in 1995, and Everton the following year. Victories that will live long in the memory of all York City supporters who were there to see it.

After departing the club in 1999, managerial spells with Southend United and Halifax Town followed between 1999-2002.

The thoughts of everyone at York City Football Club is with Alan’s family and friends at this sad time.

May he rest in peace.
