York City won 2-0 against Dagenham & Redbridge at the Chigwell Construction Stadium in the Vanarama National League on Saturday afternoon.

Adam Hinshelwood made three changes to the side which suffered the first defeat of the season at home on Bank Holiday Monday against Boston United.

Dipo Akinyemi, Ashley Nathaniel-George, and Marvin Armstrong started in place of Ollie Pearce, Billy Chadwick and Ricky Aguiar.

Marvin Armstrong went the full length just six minutes in, latching onto Ashley Nathaniel-George’s through ball. The midfielder went down in the area but City’s appeals were to no avail.

Tom Eastman scuffed a header wide just three minutes later, in what was Dagenham’s first of the occasion.

City striker Dipo Akinyemi unleashed a pinpoint, powerful strike at the top corner in the 20th minute, however Elliot Justham was over to his left-hand side for the save.

The Minstermen’s adventures forward were particularly limited throughout a competitive first half battle.

Nathaniel-George saw his cutback at the by-line swept away in the 30th minute before Rees rattled the crossbar minutes later for Daggers.

Reece Grego-Cox made his way around Male in the 34th minute, sliding home, only to be denied by the assistant referee’s flag.

York’s closest chance of the first half saw Tyrese Sinclair sweetly strike a whipped shot at goal, dipping to clip the top of the crossbar before going out.

The winger went again just before the interval, charging in from the left side to connect with Armstrong’s setup, striking into a defensive body.

A second half substitution from the referees held up proceedings for large parts of the opening exchanges in the second period, with Chay Hathway replacing an assistant referee on the line.

In a stop-start half, it took The Minstermen awhile to create anything of real note, despite battling hard.

Cameron John produced a counter in the 74th minute, exchanging with Sinclair before overlapping the winger.

The left-back proceeded to slide it across to Nathaniel-George, who laid off for Aguiar to bend one into Justham’s path.

Substitute Lenell John-Lewis lashed a shot over a minute later, swiping an effort with his left foot inside the box.

Pereira proceeded to hit an ambitious shot at Male in the 77th minute, which was easily held by City’s shot-stopper.

John-Lewis chested in the opening goal in the 80th minute, latching onto a save by Justham to give York the lead.

Adam Hinshelwood’s side continued to battle hard from there onwards, soaking up pressure.

An 89th minute chance for Dagenham was held by Male before John-Lewis cleared two successive Dagenham corners six minutes later, clattering the post in the process.

A 90+12th minute corner looked to be Dagenham’s last gasp chance, however City turned it into their own.

York cleared the corner. Billy Chadwick got onto the ball, sliding through Ollie Pearce, with the substitute charging through to slot into an empty net and commence pandemonium in the away end.
