York City fell to defeat to the hands of Premier League Sunderland at the LNER Community Stadium.
The first chance fell to the Black Cats. Timur Tuiterov receiving the ball down the left before firing at goal from a tight angle but his effort was well kept out by George Sykes-Kenworthy.
Sunderland took the lead after 7 minutes. Enzo Le Fee finding room to shoot on the edge of the box before rolling the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.
Joe Grey looked to break through for City down the middle of the pitch but he was brought down on the edge of the box from a superb tackle by Reinildo.
Ollie Banks fed in a great ball to the back post to find Ben Brookes who shot first time, only to be denied by the leg of Melker Ellborg.
Sykes-Kenworthy was called into action again when he got down low to deny Tuiterov from a curling shot.
Chris Rigg tried his luck from range but he shot wide of the right-hand post.
Sunderland had a second goal in the 37th minute. Rigg finding room on the edge of the box before rolling a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
Renildo came close just before half time but his shot from inside the box was parried away by Sykes-Kenworthy.
Timur Tuiterov extended the Sunderland lead moments later with an incredible curling effort into the top right-hand corner.
On the stroke of half time, Le Fee found room in the box before placing the ball off his left-foot into the bottom corner to make it four.
York scored just 10 minutes into the second half. Ben Brookes’ corner finding Greg Olley inside the six-yard box who flicked the ball past Simon Moore and into the net.
Sunderland restored their four-goal cushion instantly when a cross in from the left found Tom Proctor who headed the ball in from inside the six yard box.
Mark Kitching came close to catching Simon Moore off guard but his looping effort went onto the roof of the net.
The game finished 5-1, proving more minutes into the legs for City.
