The Minstermen lost 1-0 against Wigan Athletic at the LNER Community Stadium in the Emirates FA Cup Second Round on Friday night.

Latics narrowly edged past City to claim a Third Round spot after Stephen Humphry’s 61st minute strike separated the two sides, in what was a closely contested fixture.

Cold, foggy conditions made the fixture a difficult watch from the stands visually as well as on BBC television cameras.

City created early chances around the 10th minute mark through Thierry Latty-Fairweather’s driving run and skipper Lenell John-Lewis who blasted over.

It remained a relatively calm opening 15 minutes as both sides acclimatized to the conditions of the affair.

David Stockdale pulled out a strong low-down save in the 29th minute after Stephen Humphrys broke away into the Minstermen penalty area.

Humphrys was away again just three minutes later after a diagonal long-ball picked out the forward, however he was defended away from the net by Stockdale and Luke Daley collectively.

A standing ovation greeted the Minstermen at half time after an impressive account of themselves saw Wigan held to incredibly limited chances by the interval.

Latics forward Humphrys broke the deadlock on the hour mark in the second period after racing through, sidestepping on-rushing Stockdale to tap into the empty net.

Clear cut chances were few and far between for City, who continued to be solid as a unit but lack a sharpness at the top-end.

There were loud shouts for handball in the 77th minute as Burgess’ corner looked to strike the hand of a Wigan man in the area.

York looked to claw back into the game as time become limited.

In the 86th minute, substitution Maziar Kouhyar struck the bar, as Sam Tickle scrambled back to claw the effort.

Kouhyar and John-Lewis then both squandered good opportunities for City as momentum continued to go in City’s favour.

John-Lewis’ chance glanced past the post in the 92nd minute as City’s golden chance went squandering.

With additional time extended beyond the initial six minutes, substitute Callum McManaman’s 90+8th chance looked certain to nestle the net but the effort flew high and wide.
