Club Partner with York College for new Academy Pathway

By Dan Simmonite | 27th January 2022

York City Football Club and York College are proud to announce an extensive expansion to their existing relationship allowing York City to expand their education pathway.

The new relationship between college and club will see York City FC run the entirety of the College’s football programme with the York College Centre for Sport.

The partnership means talented young aspirational footballers will now have the choice of joining the Scholarship group at the club or becoming part of the football programme at York College.

Joining the scholarship programme means players will become part of Tim Ryan’s Youth Team whilst studying a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development at the college. Those players joining the York College Football Programme will have a choice of courses at York College whilst still being coached by a combination of professional football club staff.

Chairman Jason McGill commented on the partnership“Having a son who has gone through the process of trying to play professionally whilst also gaining an education, I’m well aware of the difficulties that brings. From a parent’s perspective, this opportunity means that you’re not in the position of having to choose between pursuing a football career or an education because both run in tandem in this programme, so it’s a win-win for the parents and the players.

"From the football club’s perspective, this gives us the chance to work with significantly more young players than we currently do, particularly those who may have opted to take a purely educational route."

Head of Youth Dan Wilson added: “Historically, we have had limited spaces within our Youth Team and have therefore been forced to make decisions on players’ current ability ahead of their long-term potential. By having more options post-16, we can retain players in our pathway longer, especially those that are physically late developers, which gives us greater opportunity to assess players once they are fully athletically developed."

The new partnership allows the college to further professionalise its football offering to encompass the whole of their football programme including both men’s and women’s teams. Aspiring players will now be able to pursue their footballing ambitions whilst studying at York College.

The new members of academy staff will oversee York College’s men’s and women’s first teams and the men’s second team.

The expanded pathway means that players across all teams will receive a high level of coaching from academy staff with fluency across the three men’s teams to make sure every player is challenged at the right level and make the most of their footballing potential.

Trials for the programme will be run in February half-term (Tuesday 22nd/Wednesday 23rd/Friday 25th) with women’s trials taking place in the mornings and men’s in the afternoons.
