Five Youth Team players sign professional contracts

By Bradley Saxton | 2nd July 2022

York City Football Club are delighted to announce that youth team players Ben Dale, Elliot Owen, Kyle Lancaster and Jonny Shepherd have signed their first professional contracts with the club.

Youth Team captain Jonny Haase has also extended his stay with the Minstermen, signing a new contract with the club ahead of the new season.

All five players had been regulars in Tim Ryan’s U19 side last season and also experienced training with the first-team over the past year.

Centre backs Ben Dale and Elliot Owen sign on ahead of the new season having formed an impressive partnership at the heart of the defence last season for the U19’s. Forward Jonny Shepherd signs on having scored twelve goals for Ryan’s U19 side last season.

Winger Kyle Lancaster has also put pen-to-paper after featuring twice for the first-team last season, whilst Jonny Haase extends his deal with the club having signed his first professional contract last summer.

All five players will be able to still play for Tim Ryan's side next season in the National League Alliance U19 Academy North.

Head of Youth Development Dan Wilson spoke after the players signed their contracts. He said: “ The target that the Academy set is to turn the players into pros and we’ll be looking to get all these lads set up with loans, which will give them the chance to embed the opportunity of playing men’s football.

“That’ll be our primary focus, but there will also be opportunities next season for them too that they will get to be involved with the U19s side too.

“A loan for the lads can be the first step for them into men’s football and we hope that they could be a real success for them.

“We’re looking really hard behind the scenes to try and establish some links with clubs where we’d be able to send players out on loan to in the future.”

The deals are subject to FA and National League approval.

Also following the end of their contracts, five U19 academy players have also been released from the club.

Maison Campbell, Lewis Cunningham, Jack Degruchy, Luke Jones and Josh Knowles were not offered a new deal and have left the club ahead of the new season.
