Tim Ryan sees potential in current crop

16th November 2020

York City’s under-19s manager, Tim Ryan says he is pleased with how the youngsters’ have progressed so far this season despite currently being unable to play due to the national lockdown.

The former Doncaster Rovers defender believes the current unplanned break could hinder some of the youngsters’ development; however, Ryan also heaped praise on his squad and says there are plenty of positives to take from the season so far.

He said: “We have first-year, second-year and third-year scholars which is great for a youth team.

“This year’s intake of first-year scholars has been really pleasing. The maturity they have shown is above expectation which is a major positive.

“The second-year scholars are the same ones we kept from last year and we have a really good cluster of players I am hoping two, three or possibly four can push onto third year which would be great.

“I think the youngsters we have are making great strides even during these tough times. Playing competitive games is the most valuable thing for the youth players, this is the only way they will get better.”

The under-19s manager also mentioned his aims for the remainder of the season and how he plans on helping the players progress to the first team.

Ryan talked about how the best way to improve the players is by making training sessions as competitive as possible.

Ryan added: “The aim for me is to get the players into the first team. I believe the best way to improve the lads is by making training as competitive as I can.

“By making training this way, we get to see which players blossom in the environment.

“My aim for the end of the season is to get as many second-year scholars as I can to capture the attention of Steve Watson (first team manager) if I achieve this, the season has been a success.”
