Under-19s held at Gateshead

26th September 2018

First year professionals Josh Rogerson, Harry Thompson, and Ryan Whitley made first City appearances of the season as the Under-19s drew 0-0 at Gateshead on Wednesday afternoon in the National League Under-19 Alliance.

Winger Fergus McAughtrie also returned to youth action after making three appearances for the first team over the last month.

Centreback Rogerson, who played in a three-man defence, has recently returned from a loan spell at Pickering Town.

Thompson, who has been on loan at AFC Shildon, played in the centre of midfield but was substituted midway through the second half.

Both Whitley and McAughtrie produced impressive performances but City were, ultimately, frustrated on the all-weather pitch at the 11,000-capacity Gateshead International Stadium.

Head of Youth Dan Wilson said: "It was a really scrappy game with few clear cut chances. Fergus worked his socks off for the team and Ryan made a couple of important saves in one-on-one situations to keep the scoreline level.

"Overall, I would say we played well - except in the final third, where we need to work on our creativity - but the pitch and weather conditions also made things difficult."

City's next league game is against Guiseley at Wigginton Road on Wednesday October 17 (kick-off 2pm).

The players will be involved in League Cup action on Wednesday October 10 - although details of the draw are still pending.

City (V Gateshead): Whitley; Cawthorn, Stuart, Rogerson; Dyer, Thompson (D.Jackson 70), W.Jackson (Whitfield 45), Jebson-King; A.Harrison (Henderson 60), McAughtrie, Overton (Ventura 80). Unused substitute: Binsley.
