Harrison targets breakthrough season

By Dan Simmonite | 17th August 2020

Reiss Harrison was one of five players to sign new contracts at the end of the 2019/20 season after impressing Manager Steve Watson, and the 18-year-old was delighted to sign new terms.

Speaking on the new deal and his progression he said: “I’m overwhelmed, obviously it’s what I wanted since I came here at U16s and since I’ve progressed through the youth team - now I’m here with a new deal.

“I can’t thank them enough, especially Tim (Ryan), they’ve pushed me and gave words to the gaffer which have all be positive about me.”

Harrison was heavily involved in the North Riding Senior Cup last season, which saw City progress to the semi-final stage after wins over Pickering and Whitby Town.

“It’s good – it's tough but I feel like I’ve handled myself well when I’ve been there and I got a goal against Pickering when we played them at Bootham so I feel like I’m able to do it,” said Harrison.

“It’s a big step up from the youth team, it’s a lot faster, more physical and the big guys like Newts (Sean Newton) have proven me where I’m wrong and have helped me a lot.”

Harrison was also quick to point out the various positions he can play, notably scoring 6 goals from the right-hand side of defense last year in the U19s.

He added: “Training with the first team I play centre mid and played a few games in that position, but U19s I’ve proved myself at right wing-back so I’m quite versatile.”

After signing his first professional contract with the club back in November 2018 he now feels the time is right for more first team action and has set himself the target of a breakthrough season.

He added: “I want to prove myself at first team level, in training and get on the bench, maybe a start. I need to prove myself to get there and I know I’m capable of doing it.”

Harrison has returned early to set an example for the younger players in the U19s squad, along with fellow professional Charlie Jebson-King who joined in when youth team pre-season began last week.

Both will continue to train with the first team when preparation begins for the 2020/21 season.
