Heslop: Fans gave us a 'real boost'

16th August 2017

Simon Heslop has praised York City supporters for giving the team a 'real boost' during Tuesday night's game against Darlington.

A crowd of 3,944 - the biggest attendance for a National League North fixture so far this season - watched City and Darlington contest an action-packed goalless draw at Bootham Crescent.

Manager Gary Mills described City's first half display as the 'best 45' minutes since his return to the club 10 months ago and midfielder Heslop said: "The fans were really good - especially kicking their way in the first half. It gave us a real boost. I think that gave us that extra edge to make the performance so good in the first half."

City have now bounced back from the shock of the opening day defeat against AFC Telford United and collected seven points from the last three games.

"Overall, I thought we deserved to win the game," said York-born Heslop. "We were not very good against Telford, there's no getting away from that, but on Tuesday night there's a lot of positives to come out of it - and we need to take it into the weekend and get three points."

Heslop believes his own performance on Tuesday night was his best of the season.

"I think I was better than I have been so far," he said. "I felt a lot fitter, I have got a few 90 minutes under my belt now so, hopefully, there's more to come from me."

City host Nuneaton Town on Saturday at Bootham Crescent (kick-off 3pm).
