Sam Jones loaned from Harrogate

By Dan Simmonite | 27th February 2020

City have completed the signing of Sam Jones from Harrogate Town on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The versatile forward trained with the first team squad today and is eligible for the game against Curzon on Saturday subject to FA and National League approval.

York manager Steve Watson was pleased after capturing the Yorkshireman: “I’ve been a big admirer of his. I first saw him play against us for Gateshead when I was at Macclesfield and he caused us a lot of problems.

“He is an experienced player and not the same type of player as Kurt (Wiloughby), not an on-the-shoulder striker he is more of someone that will come and receive the ball. Especially after last week’s performance against Kidderminster where we did struggle to stay on the ball, I think he will be very important.

“He can play in a few positions as well, he can play as a number ten, off the striker, the top of a midfield three and either side of a striker if we go for a front three so it gives us good options.

“He has not played an enormous amount of games, but if you look at his goal to game ratio it looks very good so I think he will be a valuable addition.”

Jones has impressed over the years with his goalscoring ability, especially in the lower leagues of non-league which earned him a move to the Football League, playing for the likes of Grimsby Town, Cheltenham Town and Shrewsbury Town in League One.

He signed for Harrogate Town at the start of the season, but now makes the move over to the Minstermen to bolster the National League North promotion push.

Watson added: “Speaking to people that know him he is a great player to have around the place and at this stage of the season you are very wary of who you bring into the squad so you don’t upset the atmosphere around the place. I have no doubt that Sam will come in and just improve it.”
