Skipper: "Let's make home a fortress"

2nd August 2017

Skipper Sean Newton wants to turn Bootham Crescent into a 'fortress' this season.

The Minstermen kick-off life in National League North with a home game against AFC Telford United on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Newton, who spent three years playing at Telford earlier in his career, said: "I think the first game in any league is always the hardest. Both teams are nervous and don’t really want to lose. The main thing is we want to win, we are at home, and we need to make this place a fortress.

"We want to win every home game and pick up as many points away from home," he said. "That would give us a chance of winning the league and that’s what we want to do.

"Telford at home is no different. We want to make sure that we set the stall out right, go and win the game, and play how we want to play and dictate it. Three points is massive for us if we can get them.

"The best thing you can do in the first game of the season is win and, if you can win with style, that’s even better. Word of mouth gets around and people become scared of you. That’s what we want to do. We want people to come here and be scared about coming here.

"We don’t want them to come here and think ‘Oh, there’s a chance of getting a few points here.’ We don’t want that," he stressed. "We want this to be our fortress where no-one comes and gets points."
