Steve Watson expecting two more signings today

By Dan Simmonite | 14th August 2020

Steve Watson has provided a recruitment update, with two players expected to sign on the dotted line today.

The gaffer spoke on his potential signings: “I’m hoping to get two over the line today – two really good signings for us and two different types of players but can very much play together.

“Hopefully there will be one early next week and we will take stock. It's really good business done in a pretty good space of time.

“From then on, unless something glaringly obvious comes out the woodwork we can be a little bit more patient.

“League/Championship clubs are starting a lot earlier than us this year and there may be players who aren’t involved in those teams who might suit us on a loan basis.

“It’s a good starting point when you consider the start of the season is seven weeks away.”

The current squad consists of 13 players after the signings of Michael Duckworth and Kieran Kennedy yesterday and Jack Redshaw on Wednesday.

The gaffer also spoke on transfer speculation over the last few weeks: “The main one was obviously that we enjoyed having Kurt Willoughby here last season,” said Watson.

“He got out of it what he wanted – some game time – we got a really good forward who hit the ground running with us. Obviously, we would have liked to have kept him last year, but he is Fylde’s player.

“We have made an enquiry this summer but Fylde have made it quite clear he is going to remain their player.”

Watson’s recruitment so far has seen players drop from higher levels to play for the club and the Manager has said he has had to ‘think outside the box’ with his summer targets.

He said: “It’s been a strange window regarding some of the targets we set ourselves – certainly some of the top scorers at this level have committed their futures to the clubs they were at during lockdown. Mainly because of security and the ability to be furloughed.

“We’ve had to think outside the box a little bit and we’ve brought a few players in who haven’t played at this level. What I will say is that I’ve seen them all, a lot have played against my teams at higher levels so I’m pretty sure they can play in the National League North and be successful with us.”

Watson spent his playing career in the Premier League with the likes of Newcastle United and Everton before starting his coaching career with Huddersfield Town and holding similar roles at Birmingham City and Macclesfield Town before moving into management with Gateshead.

And he says his footballing contacts have helped him with the recruitment: “I’m spent a long part of my life in football and you do pick up a lot of good friends and good contacts but you also have a lot of people that you trust,” he said.

“Regarding the players I’ve signed, these are all players I’ve seen a lot of and worked with a lot of them.

“You’ve got people's opinions but you’ve also got your own eyes and your own experiences with them to count on.

“The two players I’m hopefully signing today have played against me for different teams and they have always caused a lot of problems. They should, along with Jack Redshaw, really complement each other.”
