Tough night for City

18th July 2017

York City 0
Blackburn Rovers 8

YORK City suffered a first defeat of the summer tonight (Tuesday) when losing 8-0 against Blackburn Rovers.

The Lancashire club, who are favourites to win next season’s League One title, never looked in real danger and cruised to a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Bradley Dack, Ben Gladwin (2), Corry Evans, Paul Caddis (2), Danny Graham, and Elliott Bennett.

City had entered the game lookingto build on their encouraging pre-season performances against Farsley Celtic and Scunthorpe United.

Manager Gary Mills made one change to his starting XI with Simon Heslop, who dropped to the bench, being replaced by Theo Wharton.

City made a bright start with Louis Almond narrowly firing over the crossbar and Blackburn forced to defend back-to-back corners.

But defender Hamza Bencherif blocked a close range effort from Liam Feeney as Blackburn began to look dangerous.

The visitors took the lead in the 12th minute when a cross from Corry Evans found striker Bradley Dack unmarked to score from 12 yards out.

It took just five minutes for Rovers to double the lead as Evans hit a low shot from the edge of the box which took a deflection past goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

Although York resisted for a period, Rovers scored again in the 27th minute as Gladwin beat Worsnop with a low angled drive from the edge of the penalty area.

City striker Jon Parkin was unlucky not to pull a goal back when his back header from a Sean Newton threw bobbled just wide of the far post.

But Rovers added a fourth goal just moments afterwards when Gladwin scored his second of the game.

Mills made four substitutions at the interval with Heslop, Michael Rankine, Sam Muggleton, and Jassem Sukar replacing Adriano Moke, Amari Morgan-Smith, Josh Law, and Alex Whittle.

Things got no easier for City after the break and Caddis scored two goals in the space of six minutes to put Rovers 6-0 ahead with just over half an hour still to play.

Goalkeeper Luke Simpson replaced Jon Worsnop, Kaine Felix replaced Parkin in attack, and Connor Smith came on for Sean Newton as Mills made his final changes of the game.

Blackburn substitute Graham scored with a far post header in the 75th minute as Rovers made it 7-0.

Substitute Bennett made it 8-0 with the best goal of the night – a thumping 30 yard drive beyond the reach of Simpson.

The York goalkeeper was at full stretch soon after to tip over a dangerous free-kick from Charlie Mulgrew.

For City, who will be seeking to bounce back from relegation to the sixth tier National League North this season, there is consolation in the knowledge that Blackburn will be 'major players' in next season’s third tier.
