Watson keen to promote youth

Nath Dyer

Manager Steve Watson is keen to include the younger members of his squad in and around the first team this season to develop the raw talent emerging from the academy.

Highly rated right-back Nathan Dyer was even granted his opportunity to impress against Blyth Spartans on Tuesday night, with Watson pleased with what he saw from the 19-year-old.

He said: “I think it was good the other night that we could involve Nathan and I was keen to give him a good spell on the pitch.

“I thought he was outstanding, really positive, confident and another really good option.

“It also gives us the chance to put Griffiths in midfield if we need that little bit of steel near the end of a game.”

Watson also feels that loan spells are a vital part of nurturing players, with Jake Wright currently on loan with Boston United and Jake Watson recently signing for Pickering Town on a one-month deal – with more expected to follow suit.

Notably, Jake Wright has scored three goals in four appearances for the Pilgrams and will be looking to force his way into Steve Watson’s plans once his loan spell is up in January.

Watson added: “I think loans are important, I don’t want players to be sitting on a Saturday and not playing football.

“I know they would rather be playing for York City, but I think it’s important for them and their careers to go out and get games under their belt and you will probably see that happen with two or three more.”
