We will remember them

11th November 2020

On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, we will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

During World War II (1939-45) five York City players lost their lives during the campaign to free Europe.

Every year the Vice Presidents have followed the tradition of laying a wreath in time for Remembrance Day to those who gave their lives for their country during the 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 campaigns.

Following this year’s Remembrance Day, the memorial will be taken down and a new permanent memorial will be created within the South Stand at the LNER Community Stadium to carry on the tradition of remembering the fallen.  A service and a blessing will be organised for Remembrance Day 2021.

Let us not forget those who gave their lives for our great country.

Due to the efforts, the research and persistence of the late Sidney Robert (known as Bob) Burns – subsequently carried on by his daughter, Elizabeth Lewis, the Chairman Jason McGill and his fellow directors agreed to the creation of a permanent memorial to those ex-players who gave their lives for the country.

Thanks also to the late David Batters, Club Historian for many years, for the support he gave Bob Burns whilst carrying out the research.

On the 3rd December 2011, prior to the game against Kettering Town the club unveiled the commemorative plaques to five ex-players who lost their lives. The club invited family members, relations, and our own supporters’ groups to the unveiling of the memorial/plaques. The Reverend Steve Benford of St Luke’s Church carried out the blessing.

Unfortunately, Bob Burns died before the club was able to fulfill his quest, in recognition his daughter Elizabeth Lewis laid a wreath for those who lost their lives and to her father’s commitment to the cause.   A wreath was also laid on behalf of York City Football Club.

The Chairman, on behalf of the club, presented a cheque for £1,000 to ‘Help the Hero’s campaign. The Vice Presidents also donated to the fund.
