Alex Whittle is back at York City!

By Dan Simmonite | 2nd July 2022

We can confirm the signing of Alex Whittle from National League rivals Chesterfield.

Whittle, now 29, rejoins the Minstermen after five years away from the club playing for the likes of Forest Green Rovers, Boston United and Gloucester City.

The left back played 68 times for City over a two year spell between 2016 and 2018, winning the FA Trophy in 2017 with Gary Mills.

He joins a now 18 man first team squad ahead of the club’s first season back in the National League.

Upon signing, Whittle said: “I’ve always had a look at [the team] especially when the new Manager came in and I was rooting for them in the Playoffs.

“I’ve had two really good seasons especially the last 18 months, we’ve (Chesterfield) gone for promotion and I’ve scored a few goals as well.

“I think we can go quietly under the radar [this season]. Obviously, there are big clubs at this level who have a lot of money – they will get all the talk - but we are quietly confident. I’ve seen some of the signings we’ve brought in - there are some good players here.

“We want to aim for promotion but if not then definitely playoffs. I want to play as many games as possible and kick on again.”

The deal is subject to FA and National League approval.
