Askey aims to bring in new recruits

By Dan Simmonite | 8th December 2021

John Askey suffered his first away loss as York City boss yesterday as the Minstermen fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Gateshead.

Askey was honest in his reflection on the result and seemed determined in his quest to better his side.

Speaking on last night’s game, he said: “It wasn’t good enough. Everyone who came could see that and we can’t hide behind anything – we need to be better. We will regroup on Thursday and go again against Chorley.

“They were [a tough side] but I thought first half we allowed them to play, and we didn’t go and press the man on the ball.

“It’s gone now, and we can’t do anything about it – I have to try and sort it out and hopefully in the next few weeks I will be able to make us better.”

The new boss, who started his role just under a month ago, has inherited a full squad but has moved initially to extend Mitch Hancox’s loan deal and bring in defensive midfielder Kieran Wallace from League One Burton Albion.

And Askey expects more movement in the coming weeks as he looks to strengthen his side.

“We need to bring one or two players in and one or two players out – obviously that is why we are in the position we are,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to the Chairman, and he has been supportive in allowing me to bring players in so hopefully we will be able to bring one or two in.

“But it’s no use bringing people in if they are not capable, so we have to be patient and not rush into too much and eventually turns things around.”

Askey also outlined his intentions to get the crowd on side, with a record attendance expected this Saturday against Chorley at the LNER Community Stadium.

He added: “If you want to achieve something then you’ve got to win your home games and especially in front of a crowd. We have to start to get the crowd on our side and the only way we are going to do that is by winning games.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance online for this Saturday’s game, with adults priced at just £5, concessions £3 and U14s FREE.
