Jason Gilchrist signs from South Shields

By Dan Simmonite | 19th June 2021

York City Football Club is delighted to announce the permanent signing of Jason Gilchrist from South Shields.

Gilchrist, who has proven prolific at National League North level with FC United of Manchester and Southport in recent years, caught the eye again in South Tyneside last season, scoring six goals in nine appearances for the Mariners, on top of a goal against City in pre-season.

It adds to his tally of 76 competitive goals over the past five seasons.

The 26-year-old joined up with City on loan last year and started in the first game at the LNER Community Stadium against AFC Fylde. After impressing Manager Steve Watson in training over the break in play, he makes the permanent switch to North Yorkshire for the 2021/22 season.

Upon signing, he said: “When the interest came in for the permanent move it was a no brainer really. I came here and I felt like I fitted in straight away – I travel in with a couple of the lads who I get on really well with which makes a big difference.

“I’m no stranger to this level, I had really good years when I was at FC United and Southport and ended up finishing the top goalscorer in the league. My goal is to be the top goalscorer for the club and hopefully go and push to be the top goalscorer in the league.”

Assistant-Manager Micky Cummins said: “What we saw in his day to day, his track record and his career speaks for itself really.

“He was coming off top scorer in most training sessions whether that be finishing practice or a practice match – he knew how to find the back of the net – identifying that talent last year obviously we are happy to have him on board. He is highly spoken of and thought of throughout the league.”

The move is subject to FA and National League approval.
