John Askey signs permanent contract!

By Dan Simmonite | 24th March 2022

York City Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of John Askey as First Team Manager on a permanent basis.

Askey has put pen to paper at the club after steering the team into a playoff position and winning the Manager of the Month award for February which coincided with a twelve-game unbeaten run.

The Gaffer brings a wealth of experience to the club, with over eight years managing the likes of Macclesfield Town, Shrewsbury Town and Port Vale. During this time, he developed a reputation for playing attractive football and won promotion to the Football League with Macclesfield on one of the lowest budgets in the division.

Upon signing, Askey said: “I’m looking forward to it. I think this is a fantastic club and hopefully I can do the position justice.

“It was a very easy decision, coming into the club I got on very well with the players and the staff. It is a good challenge and hopefully I can get the club back to where it needs to be.

“We need to plan for what might be, or what might not be. We don’t know what league we will be in but it’s important we sat down and said where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do and players we wanted to bring in.”

John Askey will mark his first game as permanent manager of York City this Saturday against Leamington at the LNER Community Stadium.

Chairman, Jason McGill added: “We are delighted that John has accepted a permanent position with the club.

“He has turned around our fortunes and performances in such a short period of time and has made clear his intentions and love for the club, the people and the fans.

“It was a unanimous decision by the board, and we always act in the best interests of the football club. In this case, we needed some stability and time to plan and build for next season – it wasn’t right to leave this until the end of the season.”

The club would like to congratulate John on his work at the club so far and look forward to a positive future under his management.
