Loan Watch: Minstermen due back in January

By Bradley Saxton | 30th December 2021

The Minstermen have loaned out several players to lower league clubs which will help with their development. We look at how the players are progressing in their spells away from the club, with their loan deals due to expire in the new year.

Mark Beck, Mitch Hancox, Remy Longdon and Kieran Wallace remain on loan with City until January, with decisions still to be made and discussions ongoing with parent clubs on potential extensions.

Defender Lewis Cunningham joined York in the summer and has appeared regularly within Tim Ryan’s U19 side in the National League Alliance U19 Academy North this season.

He has also appeared on the bench for the first team on several occasions this season, but has recently found his chances limited on a match day.

To aid his development, he was recently loaned out to Northern Premier League Division One West side Warrington Rylands. He made his debut for the club a few days later in their 3-0 defeat away at Leek Town in the league, his only game for the club so far this season.

Luke Jones is another U19s player who has recently departed on loan. The striker has also appeared regularly for Ryan’s U19 side, and has recently joined Northern Premier League Division One East side Pickering Town.

The forward signed his first professional contract with the Minstermen in the summer, but he is still yet to make his first-team debut for the club.

Since signing on loan for The Pikes, Jones has gone on to appear two times for the North Yorkshire side, where he scored his first professional goal during their 5-2 defeat against Bridlington Town on the 28th December.

Ryan Whitley has become first choice in goal for Northern Premier League side Scarborough Athletic this season having signed for the club on loan in the summer.

He has featured regularly for them so far this season, who are managed by former York City player Jonathan Greening, who coached the young shot-stopper when he played for the club’s academy side.

So far this season he has kept a total of 9 clean sheets in 20 appearances for the Seadogs in the league, as they sit just outside the Northern Premier League playoff positions.

Former Youth Team captain Archie Whitfield has enjoyed regular football so far this season, having joined Northern Premier League Division One East side Ossett United in the summer.

He is also still yet to make his first-team debut for the Minstermen, but so far this season he has appeared 17 times for the West Yorkshire side.

Reon Potts is also out on loan with the Sheepicorns, enjoying a regular starting position with the 8th tier side.

The former Scunthorpe United striker joined the Minstermen last summer after a trial period. After making multiple appearances from the bench last season, he signed a new deal with the club at the start of this season.

So far this season he has gone on to score 6 goals in 16 appearances for Ossett United, with his most recent goal coming in their 3-2 league win away at Tadcaster Albion on the 28th December.
